Portus is an edge web-based Marine Information System developed by QUALITAS Remos for its use in all the marine related sectors where we work. Portus was conceived and developed on a twofold approach:

1st approach: “Let us make general marine information usable”

The expansion of permanent Ocean Observing Networks that collect data from different measurement instruments (like buoys, tide gauges, satellites, HF radars…) and generate numerical modelled data with new ocean forecasting tools is resulting in an exponential growth of ocean related information. Portus is a powerful 24/7 IT solution to fuse, integrate, visualise and manage all this information in a reliable and user-friendly way.

Spanish National Ports and Harbours Authority (Puertos del Estado) collaborated wih QUALITAS Remos to develop this approach of Portus Marine Information System and is now using it to manage all its real time measuring network data as well as to fuse forecast data coming from its modelling tools (click here to read more about this project).

2nd approach:“Let us provide the most accurate ocean surface currents nowcast and short term forecast”

Portus by QUALITAS is a unique IT solution to get the most out of CODAR SeaSonde HF radar data (real time and time averaged surface currents and wave data).

Portus is able to fuse, manage, visualize and export data coming from up to 24 HF radar stations in real-time. State of the art Quality Control and Quality Assurance processes are performed to obtain and provide the most accurate and reliable HF radar data.  Specialised HF radar operation tools are provided like monthly automatic performance reports, quality indexes generation and alarm system.  Access to different data as well as to these operation and other exportation tools is password protected.

Added value information products 

  • Open Mode Analysis (OMA): Robust mechanism for interpolating and gap-filling two dimensional velocity HF radar measurements (Kaplan and Lekien, JGR 2007).  Some OMA advantages:
    • Smooth, two-dimensional current fields with no gaps. Key feature to use HF radar data on trajectory models with applications on Search and Rescue and Oil Spill trajectory nowcast.
    • Produce currents closer to the coast
  • Short Term Prediction System (STPS)
    • 12 hours forecasted data for ocean surface currents. Gives answer to the question: where are the surfaces currents going in the future. Powerful tool for Oil Spill Trajectory and Search and Rescue trajectory forecast.
