QUALITAS has recently commissioned a new SeaSonde installation in the harbour of Marina di Ragusa in Sicily (Italy) inside the CALYPSO Follow-On project. The CALYPSO FO project partnership comprises one Maltese partner, the Physical Oceanography Research Group from the University of Malta, and four Sicilian partners: University of Palermo (Polo Territoriale Universitario della Provincia di Trapani), L’Istituto per l’Ambiente Marino Costiero del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (IAMC-CNR), University of Catania (CUTGANA) and ARPA SICILIA (Agenzia Regionale per la Protezione dell’Ambiente).

This new station has been integrated into the existing Malta-Sicily CALYPSO network consisting of 3 SeaSonde stations (1 in Sicily and 2 in Malta) that was already commissioned by QUALITAS as part of the CALYPSO project to monitor the Channel between Sicily and Malta. A new Central Data Management Platform (Combine station + PORTUS Marine Information System) has also been delivered and installed in Sicily as part of the project adding to the already existing Central Platform in Malta.

This new installation is providing the following benefits to the HF radar observing network:

  • Better coverage in the Western part of the Channel and in the Sicilian coast
  • Better quality of “total” data in the middle of the channel
  • Redundancy. System operational even if one stations is unavailable
  • Better spatial and also temporal data coverage
  • More reliable system

Coast guards, civil protection organisations and local environmental protection agencies in both Malta and Sicily stand to benefit from this new technology, as will companies managing oil extraction platforms and tourist organisations reliant on unspoilt coastlines and safer maritime transportation.
